CHAPTER SIX

DANA had always thought that the idea of a drowning person seeing his life flash before his eyes was something of an exaggeration. Now she knew better, because in the split second she stood there looking at Tiffany Rowe’s outstretched manicured fingertips, Dana could see not only her past but her future. And she didn’t like the looks of it. In fact, she had a nasty feeling that she was watching seven and a half million dollars waving goodbye.

Not if I can help it, she thought. At least I can go down fighting.

She shook Tiffany’s hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Dana Mulholland.” Her voice was huskier than usual, but she comforted herself that Tiffany had no way of knowing that.

Tiffany’s neatly-plucked eyebrows arched. “Mulholland? Not Ferris?”

Dana could have swallowed her tongue. It was hardly a crime these days for a woman not to take her husband’s name, but under the circumstances, anything which caused questions could be dangerous. If Tiffany didn’t believe this performance…

“Dana’s a career woman through and through,” Zeke said. “Things like names and jobs and independence are very important to her.”

“But rings don’t seem to be,” Tiffany observed.

Against her will, Dana’s gaze shot to her own bare left hand.

Zeke hadn’t paused. “That’s why I’m giving up my business—so we can be together.”

Tiffany smiled at him. Though it would be more accurate, Dana thought, to say that she showed her teeth—because there was no amusement in the expression. “How odd that you’ve never said anything about that particular reason before, Zeke.”

Zeke smiled just as broadly. “Well, of course I didn’t confide all my secrets. I want to sell my business, Tiffany, not give it away. Surely you wouldn’t expect me to tell you exactly how anxious I was to sell until after you’d made an offer.”

“There’s nothing signed yet,” she reminded him.

Zeke shrugged. “We’ve pretty much made the bargain. What’s left to decide is only details. That’s why I concluded there was no point in delaying my move any longer.”

“Because your wife needs you now,” Tiffany murmured.

Dana decided she’d stayed on the sidelines long enough. “That’s right. I need him desperately.” She put a possessive hand on Zeke’s arm, and he cupped his fingers over it and smiled down at her.

It was a dazzling smile, and even though Dana knew it was only a performance, it still made her feel warm all over.

“But if she’s so self-sufficient, what does she need you for?” Tiffany mused. Her big blue eyes summed Dana up and then her gaze drifted around the room, surveying not only the living room but the areas beyond the open doorways.

“I wouldn’t think I’d have to explain that to you, Tiffany,” Zeke said gently.

Something about the tone of his voice not only drained all the warmth out of Dana but sent chills up her spine. He sounded as if the woman had firsthand, intimate knowledge of what he had to offer…but he’d told Dana that he hadn’t even dated Tiffany. He couldn’t have slept with her.
